The island Catalina ( Catalina Island ) is a tropical island in the Caribbean Sea, in the province La romana and located about 2 Km. from the south- east coast of the Dominican Republic.

The island has an area of ​​only 9.6 square kilometers , and has a diverse set of ecosystems, including sand dunes , mangroves and coral reefs . The island , known by Indians as the Labanea or Toeya , was christened ” Santa Catalina ” by Christopher Columbus , who discovered it in May of 1494, in honor of the daughter of Queen Isabella of Castile.
